Heriz Tabriz carpets are among the most popular rural woven carpets in Iran, attracting numerous customers worldwide with their harmonious plant-based colors and geometric patterns.
Heriz Tabriz carpets are woven in the northwest part of Iran, in the city of Heriz, located in Tabriz province. In this province, around thirty cities and villages are engaged in Heriz carpet weaving.
Tabriz carpets, especially Heriz carpets, are renowned and recognized worldwide not only for their beautiful designs but also for their durability and quality.
Due to the low temperatures and severe cold in this region, carpets are woven thick and firm to keep the floors warm and comfortable.
Carpets in this region are woven by hand without the use of hooks, using several layers of Dastres wool and four knots per centimeter. In the weaving of Tabriz carpets, symmetrical knots are used.
The secret to the durability of Tabriz carpets, especially Heris carpets woven in the Heriz region, lies in the wool of the sheep in this area. The soil in the Heriz region is rich in copper. Copper metal in water and plants is the main nutrient for the sheep, making their wool flexible.
Heriz is a county in East Azerbaijan province, where special carpets with unique designs are woven.
The Heriz county is so well-known worldwide, even countries like the United States and England recognize it, and the reason for its popularity is the extraordinary handwoven carpets of this county.
This type of carpet is considered special and high-priced due to its antique and luxurious designs. Many palaces and important centers in Europe use this type of carpet, and the White House is one of the most important centers decorated with Heriz carpets.
The features of Heriz carpets include high quality, special and unique designs, high durability, high sound absorption, resistance to wear, lightweight, and ease of maintenance and cleaning.
Heriz carpets come in a wide variety of dimensions. Common dimensions include 1×5, 1×2, 2×3, 3×5/3, 2×5, and 4×3 meters, with knot densities of 15 to 30. Sizes of 6, 12, and 20 square meters are considered the most important.
Patterns such as Tajeri, Saboori, Rozgol, Heyat Gol, Tavakoli, Samad Khan, Chalangari, and Afshan are commonly used. These carpets are mainly woven using Islamic geometric shapes and broken lines.
Heriz carpets generally feature darker tones such as dark red (laki), indigo, brown, and beige. Natural dyes derived from plants like indigo, onion skin, black poplar, and various roots give these carpets exceptional beauty and environmental value.
The quality of Heriz carpets is known for very high durability and premium wool. Researchers believe copper-rich soil and rivers where sheep graze contribute significantly to wool quality. With proper use, Heriz carpets can last for decades.
Machine-made carpets appear glossier due to synthetic fibers like polyester and acrylic, while handwoven Heriz carpets gain richer colors over time.
Handwoven carpets show slight irregularities in knots and patterns, whereas machine-made carpets are perfectly uniform. Inspecting the back of the carpet helps identify authenticity.
Although Heriz carpets gain beauty after washing, testing colorfastness is essential. Rub a wet white cloth on a small area before washing.
If no color transfers, professional carpet cleaning services are recommended to preserve quality.
The price of Heriz carpets depends on size, quality, and design. Prices range from several million to several hundred million. Purchasing from reputable sellers is highly recommended.
