Heriz Tabriz Carpets

Heriz Tabriz carpets are among the most popular rural woven carpets in Iran, attracting numerous customers worldwide with their harmonious plant-based colors and geometric patterns.

Heriz Tabriz carpets are woven in the northwest part of Iran, in the city of Heriz, located in Tabriz province. In this province, around thirty cities and villages are engaged in Heriz carpet weaving.

Tabriz carpets, especially Heriz carpets, are renowned and recognized worldwide not only for their beautiful designs but also for their durability and quality.

Due to the low temperatures and severe cold in this region, carpets are woven thick and firm to keep the floors warm and comfortable.

Carpets in this region are woven by hand without the use of hooks, using several layers of Dastres wool and four knots per centimeter. In the weaving of Tabriz carpets, symmetrical knots are used.

The secret to the durability of Tabriz carpets, especially Heris carpets woven in the Heriz region, lies in the wool of the sheep in this area. The soil in the Heriz region is rich in copper. Copper metal in water and plants is the main nutrient for the sheep, making their wool flexible.

all about Heriz Carpets:

Heriz is a county in East Azerbaijan province, where special carpets with unique designs are woven.

The Heriz county is so well-known worldwide, even countries like the United States and England recognize it, and the reason for its popularity is the extraordinary handwoven carpets of this county.

This type of carpet is considered special and high-priced due to its antique and luxurious designs. Many palaces and important centers in Europe use this type of carpet, and the White House is one of the most important centers decorated with Heriz carpets.

Features of Heriz Carpets:

The features of Heriz carpets include high quality, special and unique designs, high durability, high sound absorption, resistance to wear, lightweight, and ease of maintenance and cleaning. Heriz carpets come in a wide variety of dimensions. Common dimensions for weaving these carpets include 1x5, 1x2, 2x3, 2x3, 3x5/3, 2x5, and 4x3, which are produced with knot densities of 15 to 30. However, dimensions of 6, 12, and 20 square meters are considered the most important for weaving carpets in this county.

Nevertheless, carpets with different dimensions and square meters are also woven in this county, which are diverse according to the needs and tastes of customers. The geographical region also influences the weaving of these carpets, and by looking at the design of Heriz carpets, one can roughly guess which region of Iran they were woven in. Patterns such as Tajeri, Saboori, Rozgol, Heyat Gol, Tavakoli, Samad Khan, Chalangari, Afshan, etc., are used in Heriz carpets. The weaving of Heriz carpets is mainly done using Islamic geometric shapes and broken lines.

The color scheme of Heriz carpets symbolizes the use of various contrasts, which are used in the pattern throughout. These contrasts include combinations of dark and light colors, contrast in the color rhythm of the carpet, and other factors. In general, Heriz carpets are more inclined towards dark coloring, which is due to the high preference of weavers for colors such as dark red (laki), indigo, brown, and beige. The use of colors inspired by nature, along with the creative minds of the weavers, has led to the use of special and unique colors in the design and coloring of Heriz carpets. In the case of Heriz carpets, the ideas used in their weaving include the use of myths, plant covers, and religious beliefs and beliefs. The weaving of Heriz carpets with the use of these ideas and various sources has resulted in special and unique examples of handwoven carpets.

The quality of Heriz carpets is also known for its very high durability and the use of very high-quality wool. Additionally, researchers and experts in handwoven carpets believe that the presence of copper mines and rivers where sheep are fed in the area has made the wool quality of these sheep very high. Overall, if used properly, Heriz carpets can be easily used for more than a decade. Heriz carpets are made using natural plants found in the region, which are used for dyeing. Plants such as Rumex, Zelir, Tuluq Kuli, Onion skin, Black poplar (Black wood), Indigo, Oxtail, and Ishgun root are among the most important plants used for producing various colors in Heriz carpets. Each of these plants is used to produce a specific color, and by combining them, different colors can be obtained. The use of natural colors gives Heriz carpets more beauty and attractiveness, and on the other hand, preserves the environmental health.

Types of Heriz Carpets:

Heriz carpets belong to the city of Tabriz in Azerbaijan province. The beginning of carpet weaving in this province dates back to the 13th century. Heriz carpets come in various types, woven from the finest wool and natural dyes.

Various types of Iranian carpets, including Heris carpets, are exported to other countries. This type of carpet has many different varieties, each with its own unique characteristics.

Differences Between Tabriz Heriz Carpets and Machine-made Carpets:

Understanding the difference between Tabriz Heriz carpets and machine-made carpets is one of the most important issues that buyers of handwoven carpets face.

You need to understand the differences between these two so that when buying Tabriz carpets, you don't fall into the trap of deceitful sellers. However, buying from a reputable website ensures that the purchased carpet is indeed an authentic Tabriz carpet.

Appearance Characteristics of Carpets: Machine-made carpets are glossier compared to handwoven carpets because they use materials like polyester, viscose, and acrylic. Tabriz carpets are made using natural materials and, after a few years, acquire a brighter color, whereas machine-made carpets lose their beauty after a few years.

Design and Pattern: The pattern produced in handwoven Tabriz carpets has some flaws and irregularities, but the same pattern is woven very accurately and evenly by machines. With these explanations, identifying handwoven carpets from machine-made ones will not be too difficult.

To distinguish between Tabriz Heriz carpets and machine-made carpets, you can also use other methods such as inspecting the back of the carpet, examining the size, differences in the pile and foundation, examining the knots, and so on.

The Newest Patterns of Heriz Carpets:

The patterns of handwoven carpets are influenced by their geographical region. For this reason, by observing handwoven carpets, you can understand which region of Iran they belong to.

In the pattern of Heriz carpets, no curved lines are used, and what you will mostly see in this type of carpet is the use of Islamic geometric shapes and broken lines.

Some of the most important patterns used in Heriz carpets include Tajer, Saboori, Rozgol, Heyat Gol, Tavakoli, Samad Khan, Chalangari, etc.

One intriguing aspect of these carpets is that most weavers in this region weave without having a pattern, doing so mentally. Nowadays, new and diverse patterns of carpets are woven, which have many fans.

Points to Consider When Washing Heriz Carpets:

While the quality of Tabriz Heriz carpets is very high and they acquire a more beautiful color after washing, proper washing is of paramount importance. For this reason, you should first test your carpet and then proceed to wash it.

Wet a small part of the carpet with water and rub a clean white cloth on it. If the cloth becomes colored, it means you cannot wash the carpet because it is losing color and the purchased carpet is not authentic.

Otherwise, you can seek help from a reputable carpet washing service and entrust the carpet to a reliable place for washing.

Price of Heriz Carpets:

Heriz carpets are considered one of the artistic symbols of Iran and Iranians worldwide. With the beautiful patterns used in them, these carpets have gained popularity worldwide. The city of Heriz, located in East Azerbaijan province, indicates that carpet weaving art in this area is not exclusive to the city of Tabriz. Heriz carpets, with their various patterns and unique designs, have not only gained fame in Iran but also worldwide. The price of Heris carpets depends heavily on their size, quality, and design. Heriz carpets with excellent quality and special designs have high prices. Also, the size of the carpet also affects its price. In general, the price of Heris carpets for different sizes and qualities can vary from several million to several hundred million. For buying Heriz carpets, it is better to purchase from reputable and experienced stores and compare different prices.
